Welcome to Darbhanga, Bihar—a land renowned for its cherished sweet water ponds. Yet, recent years have brought a shadow—a water crisis that once thrived here. Hand pumps that quenched generations now bear the silent threat of arsenic contamination. Shockingly, 80% of Darbhanga's groundwater is tainted, casting a dark cloud over our existence.
Once vibrant cultural hubs, these ponds now languish due to neglect. Lack of awareness led to dire consequences—trash polluted pristine waters, inviting diseases. Aquatic life dwindled, groundwater plummeted, and our well-being hung in the balance.
The pond turned into a sad story of neglect and degradation
As time passed, drains were directed into the pond, quickly transforming it into a dumping ground for the village's waste. This shift had dire consequences for the aquatic ecosystem. The consequences were stark—fish perished in alarming numbers, rendering them unsafe for consumption. However, through diligent awareness efforts, we visited homes and convened community gatherings. Residents were educated about the dangers of draining household waste into the pond, as it not only fueled disease but also jeopardized lives.
Emerging from this gloom, a spark ignited—a commitment to reclaim and restore. H2O-365 and Center for Rural Information and Action (CRIA), with local champions, embarked on a mission to resurrect the ponds. We pooled resources, generating Rs. 125 thousand for restoration.
Despite Covid-19's halt, resolve remained. With renewed vigor, we resumed our mission, aimed to restore the ponds by June 15, 2022.
The initial step in the pond restoration process involved emptying the water from the pond. Covering an area of over 2 acres, the pond's revitalization was a significant endeavor. Leveraging the support of community members, primarily farmers, we successfully removed the contaminated water. This comprehensive effort spanned three months and required the utilization of multiple electric pumps, extracting thousands of gallons of water.
Pond Cleaning: An Energizing Endeavor
The task at hand was to invigorate our workers, as the condition of the pond posed both peril and challenge. The state of the pond was dire and hazardous, causing hesitation among the workers to venture into its depths.
It's been a journey of trials. Draining tainted waters demanded community collaboration, electric pumps toiled for months, symbolizing our unwavering commitment.
Urgency guided us. Rainwater harvesting strategies were devised—a canal capturing incoming waters, signaling a new chapter. Workers faced challenges, yet collective will galvanized restoration.
Through two years of advocacy, a shift occurred. Community perceptions changed, realizing the essence of restoration. Join us in ensuring clean water, protecting the environment, and igniting the community's spirit. Together, we shape a sustainable future—a shared journey of revival, guarding heritage, and kindling hope.
